General Breed Traits of Coton de Tulear

Coton de Tulear puppies are a notoriously happy, loving, and perky breed that have many positive traits. They are relatively active and make for a great family pet. They enjoy daily walks and play sessions, and although they are small, can endure longer physical activities on occasion.

They are extremely smart and friendly, always hoping to please their owners. If you are looking for a loving shadow to follow you around the house, a Coton de Tulear is the breed for you. They really enjoy swimming and walking on their hind legs to impress. They are a somewhat vocal breed when it comes to playing and are an intelligent, easy to train breed.

With encouraged socialization, they get along well with people, dogs, and cats, making them front runners as therapy dogs. They also adapt easily to various living environments, making for a typically seamless transition when bringing one home for the first time.

Appearance of Coton de Tulear:

Adorable doesn’t begin to describe the appearance of a Coton de Tulear but it is the best word we can think of. Coton puppies are admired for their white fur, which is considered “hair,” and is incredibly soft to touch. “Coton” is French for “cotton,” which their coat largely represents. However, they sometimes have gray or black markings among their primarily white coat.

The Coton de Tulear breed doesn’t shed and is hypoallergenic, making them ideal for people typically allergic to dogs. As a result, they do require regular grooming because of minimal shedding and long coats. In fact, brushing and bathing your Coton de Tulear regularly will help their coat thrive.

They have button black noses and energetic eyes that are often covered with bangs when their coat grows out.

The Coton de Tulear breed is a small dog, growing typically no taller than 15 inches and weighing no more than 15 pounds. The average lifespan typically ranges between 14-20 years.

Health of Coton de Tulear:

Coton de Tulear is typically a healthy breed, however, there are several long-term health issues to watch for as your Coton de Tulear ages. Although health issues are rare in the breed, they can experience some health issues as all dogs can.

Some issues can include ear infections, heart disease, liver shunts, urinary problems, back problems, and eye problems as they age.

Here are two of the most common health issues Cotons de Tulear face:

Allergies: Allergies can result in dogs frequently scratching and chewing themselves, developing some skin issues that require attention.

Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia can result in arthritis, eventually leading to pain or debilitation.

However, most Cotons de Tulear are long-lived with minimal health concerns.

Trainability of Coton de Tulear:

If you’re looking for a dog that can be somewhat easily trained, consider a Coton de Tulear. The breed is notoriously smart and eager to please their owners. Although they are a smaller breed, you’ll want to establish soon that you are in charge. However, the fact that they can be easily trained makes them a great breed for someone looking to purchase their first dog.

Although they can typically learn simple commands easily, don’t be afraid to challenge them and increase the difficulty of commands as you teach them.

History of Coton de Tulear:

Originating in the African Island of Madagascar, the Coton de Tulear is the island’s official dog and is named after the island’s southwestern town of Tulear.

Ideal Family for Coton de Tulear:

Cotons de Tulear are notoriously good family pets, interacting especially well with children. Cotons de Tulear absolutely love the attention that children give them, and with a frequent desire to play, children pair well with the breed.

Socializing your Coton de Tulear at a young age will help improve their interactions with all your family members, children included.
