The Temperament of the Coton de Tulear Breed

Happy, intelligent, and full of love, the Coton de Tulear is a great breed for any family. While each individual dog has their own personality, the Coton de Tulear breed has many general characteristics that makes it an excellent pet and companion. Here are just a few:

They’re extremely intelligent

The Temperament of the Coton de Tulear Breed

Coton de Tulears are observant and intelligent; this makes them quick learners when it comes to obedience training and other tricks. Thanks to their energy and desire to please, they’re especially good at dog-sport activities when taught with positive reinforcement.

They love people

Coton de Tulears are people-pleasers, as such, they also love people. They’re happiest when they’re spending time around their favorite humans, but they can also get along with other dogs and cats. However, due to their sociable nature, they don’t like to be separated from the people they care about, so there is the risk of separation anxiety.

Cotons love to have fun

In addition to their intelligence and their sociability, Coton de Tulears also love to have fun. They’re pretty much the Class Clown of the dog species, and they’ll often jump up and walk on their back legs in order to get attention.

They’re not guard dogs

Again, Coton de Tulears love people, but this also makes them pretty terrible guard dogs. If your doorbell rings, your Coton may bark once or twice, but that’s about it.

Females are more independent than males

While not always the case, female Cotons tend to be more independent and dominant than male Cotons. As such, females may be less prone to separation anxiety than their male counterparts.
